Gibson 335 vs. Epiphone DOT
18th April 2009
I’m comparing a Gibson 335 to an Epiphone DOT. I’m not sure how old the Gibson is… it’s at least 20 years old. The Epiphone is only a couple years old, and it has the stock pickups in it. I’m playing through a Roland Cube 30.

The Gibson sounded better to me. I’ve owned an Epiphone Sheraton in the past and although for the most part the guitar played reasonably well, I have to say that it is hard to imagine how they could make the pickups sound as bad as they did. Also, the playability of the Gibson is far better. Is it worth 3 x the Epiphone…that’s up to each individual to decide.

well i like epiphone more,
my epiphone LP custom has never let me down, and its worth 10 times the price. (well atleast 2 times lol.)

hmm is it just me or does the body of the dot look a little different of the 335 ??

yeah Gibson is a bit Clearer i think. I”m sure with a Pickup replacement NO difference at all. THe Epiphone stock pick ups have not impressed me in the past! other than the Slight Cleaner tones, Same. I’d take the epiphone any day over the gibson! price alone!

Excellent idea to compare them in the way you do - no unnecessary commentary which some reviewers seem to do … just 1:1 comparisons.

Gibson sounds a little bit more smooth.

Great head to head…Personally I like the neck pickup and both together sound of the gibson…But not 3 times better.
Any guitar can be set up to play well. Me and a buddy both own epis and vintage gibsons and the epis play and sound just fine…Now I will say that all the epis had the pickups changed so figure on doing that if you get one.
Id say if you can afford a gibson by all means go for it.. It’ll hold its value. but if you cant theres nothing wrong with an epi.

does nobody here realize that the difference isnt only in sound…does playability matter to anyone? this is where the larger gap is.

i like that epiphone

nice cooper! Once again we see, that it’s all in the hands…Keep playing guitars, not headstocks.

I like the epi tone better. I really just think gibsons as a status symbol outweigh any sort of tone advantage. I’ve played dozens of ‘crap’ guitars and I’ve loved most of them.

Good Job! Your’s is more useful than any other I’ve seen. If we were comparing two $500 guitars, it would be no problem to pick the Gibson, but for a $1000 difference, I’ll upgrade the harsh Epi pickups and buy a decent tube amp.

good work!what kind of amp do you use?gibson was a bit better.epi was a bit worse

nice, im actually thinking about buying an epiphone dot, and this video just solidified my decision. yeah the gibson did sound better but not near enough to make up for the price difference

the thing is that you’ve put a trapeze on the gibson, and that changes the tone. But very nice performance. I think the Epi and a couple of better pickups (maybe) will do it for me!

gibson sounds far better but even with the large price gap you can’t beet the feeling of holding a gibson.

What are the first riff that he play, great song and great sound too
May 25th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Hey man, would you reccomend putting a Trapeze Tailpiece on the Epiphone?
May 25th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
gibson did sound far better but c’mon with that price gap you could mod the epi till t’was the best guitar ever. =]
Im with epiphone.

The ginson sounds more sophisticated, but it is more expensive.

it’s solid state..

I think they sound identical, maybe live with a better amp you could tell a difference, but it not worth five times the price.
