Analogue Systems modular Guitar Synth

30th November 2008

Here is a really nice guitar synth setup using the Analogue Systems rs35 module along with 5 other A.S. modules. The rs35 module does a remarkable job of turning the guitar’s pitch into CV (control-voltage). There is no MIDI involved in this setup!

The rs35 module is a frequency (or pitch) to voltage converter. It can turn virtually any sound source into a one volt per octave voltage allowing you to control an analog synthesizer.

We are running a Strat into the Barber Electronics TonePress compressor pedal for added sustain. The guitar signal is then run into the low pass filter section of the A.S. rs110 Multimode filter to roll off some of the highs.

Now we run the audio into the rs35 ‘Frequency In’. The rs35’s voltage out goes to the rs95 voltage controlled oscillator. We’re using various modules to alter the oscillator sound including the rs100 Low Pass filter, the rs120 Comb Filter, and the rs290 voltage controlled digital delay/sampler.

Finally, a practical, easy way to play your analog synthesizer with a guitar. Rad.

    There is no MIDI …
There is no MIDI being used. The rs35 module changes pitch (from the guitar strings) into control voltage (1 volt per octave). This allows you to “play” a voltage-controlled oscillator with a guitar, voice, or whatever.

    Is he playing into …
Is he playing into audio input on the synth or via Midi? By midi I mean something like the roland GK series.

    I would much rather …
I would much rather spend 17,000 on a synthesizer than on a car; but you only get a loan to buy a car (LOL, not any more?), and only for a synth if part of a business loan (lol, not any more!); I’d spend my savings: okay, no pension, but happy now!! But start with the 1800, okay!

    We were actually …
We were actually only using six of the modules you see in the large A.S. system. The modules were rs35 External Processor, rs95 Oscillator, rs110 Multimode Filter, rs100 Lowpass Filter, rs120 Comb Filter and rs290 Sampler/Delay module. These six modules are just over $1800. Without the (really nice) delay module the amount drops to under $1200.

    Actually it’s much …
Actually it’s much less than I would have guessed for the converter itself… but all those other modules, wow… gonna have to rob a few banks lol

Fantastic! One day, I am going to spend the 17,000 bucks and I don’t care!

hi! thats nice! i’ll make modular with 6 rs moduls – that will be great…
